This simple nature craft has gotten hours of use in our home. This is a great way to teach letter sounds and CVC words. We try to make all of our own learning manipulatives. Pictured here are our beeswax letters. A tutorial can be found here.
What is a CVC word?
A “CVC” is a “consonant, vowel, consonant.” The vowel always makes it’s short sound. This is a great way to introduce letter sounds, decoding, and blending sounds together.
These letter rocks can be used in many different ways. You can use them as I’ve pictured here. First, have your child master the “at” sound. Then, have them tell you the sounds of the letters on the rocks. Move the “at” block up and down, having them sound out the first letter, then “at.” Have them blend the sounds together, forming the words.
Once they’re comfortable learning these sounds, they can start building words on their own! This is a perfect self directed activity once they get the hang of it.
How to Make Letter Rocks
Materials
- Rocks
- Wood slices
- Paint pen
Instructions
Use a white paint pen to draw letters onto the rocks and wood slices. I wrote letter blends on the slices, and letters on the rocks. You can do this in any way that you like.
